			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>To gain an understanding of laser cutting machine fundamentals you must understand that there are three different configurations of industrial cutting machines: Flying Optics, Moving Material and Hybrid machines. These can be defined by the way in which the laser is moved over the material. The axes of motion are named the X and Y axes. If the cutting head may be lowered or raised, it is usually designated as the Z axis.</p>
<p>The main characteristic of flying-optic lasers is the stationary work surface on which materials are placed. This provides a number of advantages. The laser can move over the material along both the X and Y axes. This means that flying optic cutters can hold the piece in the same spot during cutting, and sometimes do not need the material to be secured. The moving mass is constant, so dynamics aren&#8217;t affected by the changing size and weight of the material, unlike with a moving material laser. These machines are the quicker of all three with higher accelerations and peak velocities than other machines.</p>
<p>Moving material lasers have a laser and moving table below it for moving the material below it. This machine ensures that the material is kept at a constant distance from the laser at all times and gives a central point from which cutting slag or ejecta can be removed. The benefit with this type of machine is that it requires fewer optics. The disadvantage is that the weight of the work piece is fixed by the table&#8217;s ability to safely move it into position. Because of the machine having to be continually loaded and unloaded piece by piece these types of machine are generally the least efficient.</p>
<p>Hybrid lasers are a combination of flying head and stationary head laser cutters. The table runs in one axis and the cutting head on a second. The advantage over a flying optics machine is that they deliver a more constant beam delivery path and a simpler beam delivery method. This also makes hybrid laser cutters more energy efficient than flying optics lasers.</p>
<p>Pulsed lasers are ideal for piercing jobs, cutting holes for example. These also offer advantages when it comes to working with lightweight materials as they do not provide a constant beam which may overheat and possibly melt the work piece. Many industrial lasers have the ability to both pulse or cut using a continuous wave &#8211; ordinarily called CW cutting.</p>
<p>For improved quality when cutting a hole, double pulse lasers can also be used. These are often employed to increase material removal rate. This method is very straight forward; the first pulse cuts a hole in the surface of the work piece and the other keeps the ejecta or &#8220;slag&#8221; from bonding to the area around the hole or cut. Yet again, the reward is a cleaner material surface.</p>
<p>The end quality of materials cut by laser far exceeds those that have been cut by other cutting machines. This has to do with the beam leaving a clean cut surface. Using any of these machines will facilitate more accurate parts within a shorter amount of time than through typical methods.</p>

<p>Kaizen is a Japanese word meaning &#8220;continuous improvement.&#8221; It focuses on incremental changes for continual improvement in a business. The minute alterations continue over time rather than focusing on one significant alteration that occurs once in awhile and hopes for a drastic improvement. Kaizen says that human resources are the most considerable sector of a company. Additionally, a wild change does not promote success as well as small alterations that are performedregularly. The areas they needed to work on in order to reduce costs were inventory, space availability, and the productivity of their labor force. After the class, the business was able to lower their space needs by over 5,000 sq ft, significantly increase their productivity by almost 15%, increase turns of inventory, and their yearly return on investment for the lean consulting was more than 5 to 1. <p>Application of Kaizen</p>
